What is “www.mywifiext.net”?

www.mywifiext.net” is the default web address for Netgear Range Extender. Before you set up your WiFi Range Extender, download NETGEAR’s WiFi Analytics App to test WiFi strength in rooms throughout your home, helping you identify where your coverage is weakest.

Once you installed the WiFi extender by typing “www.mywifiext.net”, use the Netgear app to test the signal strength and you can see the steps how your network speed has improved.

How to Set up a Netgear Range extender?

You can configure your Netgear as a wireless range extender to extend the range of your existing wireless network.

Steps to configure your wireless range extender:

  • Connect your computer to the extender via wired or wireless connection.
  • Wired: Use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to one of the available Ethernet ports of the extender.
  • Wireless: Use your WiFi network manager on your wireless computer or any WiFi device to connect to the NETGEAR_EXT WiFi network.
  • Once connected, the LED which shows the device to extender will turn to solid green.
  • Open an internet browser such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.
  • Enter “www.mywifiext.net” in the address bar.
  • Click NEW EXTENDER SETUP.
  • Complete the Extender Setup screen and click NEXT.
    NOTE: This account is for your extender’s GUI username and password and for password recovery.
  • Select WiFi Range Extender.
  • Select your WiFi network that you wish to extend and click Next.
    NOTE: If your router does not support the 5Ghz band, please uncheck the 5Ghz option before clicking Next.
  • Enter your network security key or password and click Next.
  • You can change the SSID and passphrase of your WiFi Range Extender or just use the same existing network password. Click Next to save the settings.

OTHER STEPS:

  • After saving the settings, connect your wireless devices to the extender’s SSID before clicking Continue.
  • Once all the lights are on, it means your extender connects to your existing WiFi network. Click Next to proceed.
  • Fill out the product registration form to have access to product support, software update notifications and information on new products.
  • After accomplishing the form, click Finish.
    NOTE: If your device already registers or if you wish to do it later, you can click Skip Registration.
  • Your Netgear extender now properly configured as a WiFi range extender.
  • You can also use its Ethernet ports to connect your wired devices such as gaming consoles, Smart TVs, or desktop computers.

By using the WPS button

If your existing wireless network supports WPS, follow the steps below if you want to set up your extender using the WPS button.

  1. First, you need to press and hold the WPS button on the Extender for 5 seconds. The WPS LED on the front should blink.
  2. After that, press the WPS button on your wireless router, gateway, or access point within 2 minutes. And wait for at least 3 minutes while the extender connects to your existing wireless network.
  3. If successful, the WPS LED on your Extender turns solid green, the 2.4GHz Link Rate LED lights up.
  4. At the end, if your router supports the 5GHz band, you can repeat the above steps to connect the Extender to the 5GHz band. If it connects, the 5GHz Link Rate LED on your Extender should light up.
  5. Enter “www.mywifiext.net” from your web browser to see the wireless name and wireless password.

Once the extender setup is complete, it broadcast the extended network for each applicable band as “network name_2GEXT” and “network name_5GEXT”.

You can connect to the extender’s network using the same password as that of the router’s network.

How to reset a Netgear range extender?

There are two ways to reset your range extender to default settings. First, by pressing the Factory Reset button and second, by using the web user interface (GUI).

Factory Reset button:

  1. Look for an object like a safety pin or a paperclip.
  2. On the bottom of the extender, there is a Factory Reset button.
  3. Now you can press and hold the reset button using a paper clip or safety pin.
  4. Wait for 7 seconds or until the Extender LED blinks amber.
  5. You can release the Factory Reset button and wait for the extender to reboot.
  6. Once the extender reboots which means your extender is back to its factory default settings.

Web GUI:

  • In this, we prefer the computer that connects to the extender via the wired or wireless connection.
    Note: The Device to Extender LED lights became solid green which shows that a device connects to the extender.
  • Open up your Internet browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome.
  • Enter “www.mywifiext.net” at the top of the address bar of your Internet browser.
  • You can see the login page, type your Email and Password and click Log In.
  • On the NETGEAR genie page, click Settings and then Other Settings.
  • Click Reset. Click Yes to proceed.
  • Wait for the web user interface to finish resetting the device to factory default settings.

How to update the extender firmware?

NETGEAR regularly releases the new firmware versions to improve product performance and add new features.

The Netgear release the firmware for all the routers, range extender, and all other Netgear products.

Follow the steps below to update your extender’s firmware.

To update the firmware on your NETGEAR WiFi Range Extender:

  1. Launch a web browser from your computer or mobile device that is connected to your extender’s network.
    NOTE: You notice that the router and extender might have different WiFi network names (SSIDs).

  • Make sure it should connect you to your extender’s network.
  • Log in to your extender by typing “www.mywifiext.net”.
    NOTE: Enter the following login details, if a login prompt appears:
    1. Username: admin
    2. Password: password
  • If your browser displays the Menu icon of your Netgear range extender, click it.
    The extender menu displays.
  • For access to the firmware update page, select Settings > Firmware Update.
  • If you do not see settings option, select Maintenance > Firmware Upgrade.
  • Click on Check Online or Check.
    NOTE: The label varies by the extender.
  • If there is a new firmware available, follow the on-screen prompts to update the firmware.

To update the firmware by bypassing the initial setup wizard:

  • Connect your main router/gateway directly and download the newest firmware version and save it on your computer.
  • Connect your computer to the extender with an ethernet cable or wirelessly and type the following address in a browser as shown:
    mywifiext.net
    NOTE: Enter the following credentials if a login prompt appears:
    Username: admin
    Password: password
  •  
  • Select the Maintenance > Firmware Update. Then, browse to the downloaded firmware file and select it.
  • Click Upload.
    You need to click on Yes to complete the process, it will upgrade your Netgear range extender to the latest firmware version.

How to login to Netgear Range Extender?

Once you set up your NETGEAR WiFi range extender, you can log in to the extender to access the settings.

If you haven’t connected the WiFi range extender to your existing WiFi network.

To log in to your WiFi range extender:

  1. Launch a web browser from your computer or mobile device that is connected to your extender’s network.
    NOTE: Your router and extender have a different WiFi network names (SSIDs). You should verify that it connects you to your extender’s network.
  • If your extender and router use different WiFi network names (SSIDs), type mywifiext.net to the address bar of your web browser.
  • If your extender and router use the same wireless network name (SSID), enter HTTP://<extender’s IP address> (for example, http://192.168.1.250) into your browser.
  • Hit Enter. A login page displays.
  • Enter your admin username and password.
    NOTE: Your username might be an email address.
    If you forgot your username and password, click the Username & Password Help link or you can try a reset option.
  • Click LOG IN.
    The Extender page displays.
  • After that, your browser displays the Menu icon.
    The extender menu displays.
  • Select Settings to view and you can adjust the extender’s settings.

How to change wireless name and wireless password for your Netgear Range Extender?

If you want to use the One WiFi Name feature, you cannot change your extended WiFi network settings from the extender web interface. To manage the settings and to change the wireless settings, you must log in to your router.

If you didn’t want to use the One WiFi Name feature, you can change your extender’s WiFi settings by logging in to the extender web interface.

To change your extender’s WiFi settings:

  • Open up a web browser from a computer or mobile device that is connected to your extender’s network.
  • You need to log in to your extender:
    If you didn’t enable the One WiFi Name feature, type “www.mywifiext.net” in the address field of the web browser.
  • If you enabled the One WiFi Name feature, Use one of the following URLs:
  • Windows-based computer.
  • HTTP://mywifiext/
  • Mac computers and iOS devices.
  •  
  • HTTP://mywifiext.local
  • Android devices. http:// <extender’s IP address> (for example, http://192.168.1.250)
    A login page displays.
  • Enter your admin details (email address and password) and click the login button.
    The Netgear Extender page displays.
  • Select Settings > Wireless.
    The Wireless page displays to change the wireless names or password.
  • To change the WiFi network name (SSID), you need to enter a new name in the Network Name (SSID) field.
  • To change the WiFi password, please enter the new password in the WiFi Password field.
  • Click the SAVE button.
    It saves your settings.
